The GOP's Steele Curtain

Hats off to the Pittsburgh Steelers last night.  They capped off an incredible Super Bowl - by some accounts the most exciting ever.  Props, too, to Kurt Warner for being a stand-up guy on and off the field.  He makes us proud to be Iowans.

Speaking of Iowa, there's a new RNC Chairman in town, Michael Steele.  I know a lot of you are wringing your hands, sweating the fact that Iowa's first in the nation status could be threatened.  We're holding out hope that it won't happen, and see no - absolutely NO - indication that we'll be anything but first.

However, if you think being first doesn't matter and all we need to worry about is "electing Republicans," or "holding steadfast to our conservative values," then you better start paying attention.

No matter what your political stripe, everyone agrees the caucuses should remain first.  On this, all of us can rally around.  We can hem and haw about litmus tests at some other time.  But for now, we need to remain focused on being first.

Why is it so important?

You cannot build a conservative message on a house of sand.  Iowa would in no way receive the undue attention were it not for the bedrock ground of the caucuses.  Iowa Family Policy Center benefitted greatly when Bobby Jindal visited the state in November.  Without the caucuses, he wouldn't have come, and they wouldn't have the funds to continue doing the great work they're doing.  Same with Iowa Christian Alliance, Iowa Right to Life, and the like.

If we relinquish this to another state, THEY will receive all of the attention and our enormous status goes away - along with our shot at steering the agenda.

Mike Huckabee would have never had a shot were it not for the caucuses.  But, as a result, he is now a recognizable figure in our party, a rising star, and is espousing conservative principles on our behalf.

The list goes on and on and on...

So, while maintaining our conservative principles is vital, it takes a back seat to the caucuses.  Being first gives us a huge springboard to ensure that our party remains conservative.  Being pro-life is great.  Being pro-life in Iowa is more powerful than anything.  But only if the caucuses remain first.

We congratulate Chairman Steele, and let it be known, we support you fully!  Now please, support us as well.
