Political v. Practical - Compare the Flood Programs

The Democrats just don't know what to do with themselves.  They hem and haw all summer over the floods, getting nice photo ops and begging the federal government to come in and save the day.

As far as I can tell, their plan can be summed up like this:

1.  Call for a special session to help fellow Democrats in Democrat-voting areas.

2.  Use the special session to increase the gas tax.

3.  Ask the federal government for 100 percent in flood relief.

4.  Send out political emails on the state's dime.

5.  Have photo ops that you shut Republicans out of.

6.  Establish a sham flood commission.

7.  Invite Speaker Pelosi for a photo op.

House Republicans unveiled their own agenda yesterday with a comprehensive, six-step approach.  Lots of GOP members were affected by the floods as well, but you don't see them crying out to help just fellow members of their own party, or politicizing it.

The GOP's common-sense agenda is as follows:

1. Use Iowa Values Fund money to provide grants to small businesses to keep them in the area.

2. Use Power Fund money to provide grants to local governments to restore power and heating to disaster areas.

3. Cancel construction of the new state office building in Des Moines and the new Maximum Security Prison in Fort Madison and use the funds for local infrastructure, housing, buyouts, and flood plain mitigation.

4. Cancel funding for special interest projects such as $80,000 to repair an antique organ in Clermont, and $100,000 for the multi-use fitness center in Des Moines.

5. Freeze property taxes at no more than pre-disaster levels and have the state temporarily make up the difference using the general fund ending balance or the state’s rainy day Fund.

6. Approve bonus depreciation so Iowa's businesses are not socked with a tax increase due to not coupling with the federal tax code.

What was House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's response

"A special session is very much on the table but we're not interested in playing political games with this issue like the Republicans are doing right now by offering up ideas of tax cuts that would bankrupt the government."

Is he smoking crack?  WHO is bankrupting the government, Kevin?  YOU are the one spending ONE F'ING BILLION more dollars every year.

God forbid struggling Iowans get tax relief that might hurt our overblown government.
